SETTING UP THUNDERBIRD FOR IITK-WEBMAIL

Official guide available at cc site is somewhat outdated so I thought about making a new one here.

If you have got Thunderbird already installed on your system, than you can directly skip to Step 5

>>Step 1: First head over to Thunderbird  site and download the latest version of thunderbird for your system.

>>Step 2: Save the .exe file to a convenient location

>>Step 3: Open the downloaded file

It will first go to extracting and than start the installation procedure

>>Step 4:  Allow the file in UAC prompt and follow the onscreen instructions

>>Step 5: When you open Thunderbird for first time it ask for association with E-Mail and feeds just leave the settings as it is and click on "Set as Default"
Doing so will directly take you to thunderbird's compose mail screen on clicking on e-mail addresses. You can check that by clicking here after completing this configuration procedure.

>>Step 6: On next screen Thunderbird will offer you to create a new email address with some  of its associates just click on "Skip this and use my existing mail"

>>Step 7: Now Thunderbird will ask for your account details

fill in your name (this will be shown in from to the receiver instead of  your id), email address and password and click continue it will try to look online for server settings and will fail to do so then it will ask you to enter the server details manually.

or you can just click on "Manual config" to bring up the server settings

>>Step 8: Fill in the server settings as shown below and click Done
and if you are using some other mail client as Outlook or maybe something else the settings are same.
For incoming server:
                                type                   :  IMAP
                                hostname          :  newmailhost.cc.iitk.ac.in
                                port                   : 143
security             : normal/none (depending on client)
                                authentication   : normal password
and for outgoing server:
                                type                   : SMTP
                                hostname          :  smtp.cc.iitk.ac.in
                                port                   : 25
security             : normal/none (depending on client)
require login     : true/required (depending on client)
                                authentication   : normal password

>>Step 9: Now you will get a security warning about server not using encryption, just check in the box "I understand the risk" and click on Done

>>Step 10: Now your mails are also saved on you system for offline access.

For any problem while setting up your client, even if you are using anything other than Thunderbird, leave a comment.
